Maulana Azad Medical College

The foundation stone of Maulana Azad Medical College, named after a great freedom fighter and first Minister of Education and Scientific Research of free India , Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, was laid by Pandit Gobind Ballabh Pant who was himself a great freedom fighter and the first Home Minister of Free India on 24th October 1959. The building of the college was ready in a record time of a year and six months. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru -- the first Prime Minister of Independent India on 26th of February 1961, very proudly dedicated the complex of Maulana Azad Medical College to the nation.

Maulana Azad Medical College is an internationally acclaimed pioneer institute and one of the premier medical institutions of India imparting medical education. Since its foundation the college has successfully produced 6208 medical graduates, 223 dental graduates and 3018 postgraduates. The college has now completed 43 years and is now producing around 180 MBBS doctors and 100 postgraduates per year. It is very sought after institution for MBBS, post-graduate courses, and for dentistry courses. MAMC is producing world class graduates and post-graduates where standards of education and the quality of doctors produced can be compared to similarly placed institutions in United Kingdom or United States. It has endeavored to promote all facilities conducive to learning and furtherance of knowledge by:

· Contribution towards national healthcare delivery systems.
· Establishing routine and specialized laboratory services.
· Circuiting of medical education and strengthening research activities.
· Extending healthcare facilities to rural population.

Maulana Azad Medical College and Associated Hospitals complex consists of six integral units, namely, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lok Nayak Hospital, Gobind Ballabh Pant Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Centre, Dental Wing and Sushrut Trauma Centre.

Lok Nayak Hospital

The first unit to start functioning in the year 1931 was Lok Nayak Hospital (formerly known as Irwin Hospital and later named as Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital ). This is a 1500 bedded general hospital, functioning as teaching hospital for Maulana Azad Medical College and drawing patients from a very large catchment area. Besides the 12 million people of Delhi, the catchment area of Lok Nayak Hospital consists of neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states. The hospital is equipped with the latest state of the art equipment for comprehensive investigation and treatment of patients. Lok Nayak Hospital functions as a tertiary referral Centre and receives a large number of very complicated cases that are well advanced in the disease process. The doctors, nurses and other staff manning the hospital are experienced professionals dedicated to their job. The hospital admits nearly 65,000 patients annually. About 12 lakh patients are seen in the various outpatient departments of the hospital each year. About 12,000 major and 22,000 minor operations are performed in the hospital every year.

Nephrology Division/Dialysis Unit

Nephrology division includes comprehensive patient care facilities, which include medical treatment, dialytic services (both hemodialytic and peritoneal dialysis), and post transplantation services. Division is equipped with both state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic services

The patient care includes counseling by senior nephrologists, dietary advises, and also providing essential medications. Investigative services include all forms of investigations related to kidney including kidney biopsy with immunofluorescence.
